The award-winning Sámi short film BORDERLINE (PÅ GRENSA) has been selected for the Opening Night Program of the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films, taking place June 23–29, 2026.
The announcement marks another major achievement for sibling filmmakers Johannes Vang, Wilhelmina Silba, and Jonathan Vang, whose film recently won the 2026 Tromsø Palm for Best Short Film at the Tromsø International Film Festival and will also screen at the 2026 imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival running June 2-8th in Toronto.
Directed and produced by Johannes Vang, written by Wilhelmina Silba, and edited by Jonathan Vang, BORDERLINE (PÅ GRENSA) represents a remarkable family collaboration and introduces international audiences to an exciting new generation of Sámi filmmakers.
Set in a remote northern region where Norway, Finland, and Sweden meet, BORDERLINE (PÅ GRENSA) follows a tense encounter between a Norwegian customs officer, a Finnish poacher, and a mysterious Swedish traveler. As suspicion grows and misunderstandings surface, the characters are forced to navigate questions of trust, power, and identity along an increasingly volatile border.
While the film’s festival success continues to grow, it is also drawing attention to the filmmakers behind it. The Vang siblings are among a new wave of young Indigenous artists bringing contemporary Sámi stories and perspectives to audiences well beyond northern Scandinavia.
Editor Jonathan Vang will attend Palm Springs ShortFest, alongside actor Øystein Martinsen. Jonathan, along with writer Wilhelmina Silba and director Johannes Vang, represent emerging voices in Indigenous cinema and one of the most promising young creative teams currently working in the Nordic region.
