Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot just became a lot more interesting with the announcement that Kali Reis has joined the cast. Her addition is already one of the most talked-about moves in the project’s development.

Kali Reis, a citizen of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe, is a professional boxer and acclaimed actor whose career reflects both strength and storytelling. Reis made history in the ring as a two-division world champion, holding the WBC middleweight title in 2016 and the WBA, WBO, and IBO light welterweight titles between 2020 and 2022.

In 2021, Reis made her acting debut in the thriller Catch the Fair One, a film she co-wrote and starred in, portraying a fighter searching for her missing sister. The role earned her a nomination for Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards. She later starred alongside Jodi Foster in True Detective: Night Country (2024). Her powerful and haunting performance led to nominations for a Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice Award.

She joins Zach Cherry (Severance), cast as a hospital scientist, and Johnno Wilson (Twisted Metal), whose role remains under wraps. Together, they’ll star alongside Austin Abrams, with a script co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten that explores an original storyline inspired by, but not bound to, Capcom’s long-running survival-horror series.

Filming begins in October 2025 in Prague, with a theatrical release slated for September 18, 2026. The project marks Cregger’s follow-up to Weapons and could signal a return to the raw, unnerving horror roots that longtime Resident Evil fans have been waiting for.

For many viewers that followed Reis’s rise from the boxing ring to the screen, her presence alone is reason enough to not walk, but run to the theater for this highly anticipated reboot.

If Cregger’s reboot delivers on its promise, Resident Evil may finally evolve from mere adaptation into something more vital, a story led by actors who embody the fight to endure. And in that fight, Kali Reis is the perfect choice.
