First Nation Communities across Saskatchewan are mourning the loss of Seth and Rene Constant, members of the band Constant Reminder and citizens of the James Smith Cree Nation. They were among three men killed in a collision on Thursday evening.

According to the RCMP, the crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on Highway 3, about two kilometres west of Melfort, Saskatchewan. Police confirmed that two of the victims were from James Smith Cree Nation, aged 31 and 24, while the third was a 59-year-old man from Kinistino.

The two younger men, later identified by family as Seth and Rene Constant, were well known as part of Constant Reminder, a family band that often performed across Saskatchewan and Manitoba. They were known for mixing heartfelt lyrics with a sound that connected generations. Their performances often celebrated family, healing, and the strength of community.

RCMP said the 31-year-old driver of the truck died at the scene, while the 24-year-old passenger later died in hospital. The 59-year-old man driving the SUV was also pronounced dead at the scene. A collision reconstructionist continues to assist with the investigation.

James Smith Cree Nation Chief Kirby Constant released a statement expressing the Nation’s deep grief. He stated:

“These talented young men carried our Nation’s spirit with pride through their music, inspiring many across our lands and beyond. Their songs celebrated resilience, family, and identity, values that are deeply rooted in who we are as Cree people. Their loss is felt not only by their families but by all who knew them, heard them perform, and were moved by the gift of their music.”

No details have yet been released regarding funeral services or community memorials, though several gatherings are being planned to honor their memory.

Red Pop News extends our deepest condolences to the Constant family, James Smith Cree Nation, and all who are grieving. May their memory continue to guide and inspire, and may the songs they left behind remind us of the beauty that lives in our people, even through heartbreak.
