Congratulations to North of North!

When the Writers Guild of Canada announced the nominees for its 30th annual awards, North of North appeared five times, sweeping every nomination for the Comedy Series category. “Bad Influences,” “Dumpcano,” “Joy to the Effing World,” “Top of the World,” and “Walrus D*ck Baseball” were all recognized, reflecting the collective work of Aviaq Johnston, Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, Garry Campbell, Stacey Aglok Macdonald, Linsey Stewart, JP Larocque, and Moriah Sallaffie.

A clean sweep of award nominations for an entire category speaks to the authenticity and range that have defined North of North. From the first episode, fans fell in love with the unforgettable characters and story with its sharp humor rooted in community, an understanding, and a hilariously authentic portrayal of contemporary Inuit life. North of North moves seamlessly between satire, drama, and outright absurdity, while staying grounded in the complicated lived experiences of Inuit peoples.

When it comes to awards season, Indigenous TV and film have long been overlooked, especially in comedy. North of North uses humor to examine those realities without sanding down their edges or turning them into spectacle. The humor, drama, and heartbreak land because while it is community-specific, it is still understood and resonates with viewers.

The WGC Screenwriting Awards, hosted by Ali Hassan and written by Kurt Smeaton, will be presented on April 27, 2026, at Koerner Hall in Toronto, marking three decades of honoring the best of Canadian screenwriting. This year’s nominees also include Bet, Lana Longbeard, Mittens & Pants, and 18 to 35.

Beyond the nine competitive screenwriting categories, the 2026 WGC Screenwriting Awards will also recognize the labor that often happens off-screen. The evening will include several special honors, including the Showrunner Award, the Alex Barris Mentorship Award, the McGrath Service Award, and the Margaret Collier Award.

Tickets for the April 27 ceremony go on sale February 9, 2026. Full details on ticket availability and pricing will be released through the WGC ahead of the event at wgc.ca/awards.
