Robert Redford died on September 16, 2025, at age 89. What he leaves behind is more than iconic films or a festival in the snow. What he leaves behind is belief. He believed that stories from the margins, Indigenous stories, queer stories, and under-told stories mattered just as much as anything mainstream. And he built platforms so those stories could be told.
Redford’s vision began with the Sundance Institute. Over decades, Sundance was not about charm or prestige alone. It was about risk, mentorship, and creating space for voices that had long been locked out. Indigenous filmmakers found those spaces. They found resources. They found people who said, “Yes — tell that story.”
Sterlin Harjo said it plainly:
“My career and path as a young man was defined by his commitment to supporting independent cinema and especially his commitment to empower Native film and storytellers. I went to the Sundance Filmmakers lab at 23 years old. The support from Sundance made me feel like I belonged in an industry that most times felt so unreachable. He personally taught me things about story, shooting, and editing that I take with me today.”
Miciana Alise, whose work includes Fancy Dance, described a moment almost sacred in its simplicity. She remembers being a volunteer/intern at Sundance and seeing Redford’s quote on the wall: “Risk can be the catalyst that propels you forward.” That quote stayed with her.
“Without Robert Redford, Fancy Dance wouldn’t exist. When I first went to the festival as a volunteer/intern, I saw your quote on the wall and took a picture. When the ad to apply for the Indigenous program came across my feed months later, that quote immediately popped in my head to drown out the doubts I had that I could do it. Thank you sir, for dreaming so big that you made a way for us all. Your work gave the world some of our favorite films, most important and urgent stories, and brought so many beautiful people into my life, personally. Your legacy will ripple across generations. Thanks for showing the world what happens when humility and greatness collide. Thank you for being the blueprint.”
That kind of testimony is everywhere: filmmakers who say Sundance changed their lives, who say Redford’s willingness to risk on their behalf made the difference. Many speak of Redford’s belief in independence, not just the financial kind, but the kind that lets you tell something true, even if it’s complex or strange.
Redford himself once spoke of that word independence. In interviews, he said he founded Sundance to support “those sidelined by the dominant voices.” He did not want Sundance to stand against mainstream studios, but to open doors and create more opportunities for people who had almost no access.
What that means for Indigenous cinema is enormous. It means stories about identity and place, and pain and humor get told not as exotic spectacle or trauma porn but as lived reality. It means Native filmmakers are not just part of a program, but central to how Sundance imagines story, art, and responsibility.
His passing is painful. It marks the end of a particular presence in this effort. But his legacy already ripples. It ripples in Fancy Dance. It ripples in Reservation Dogs. It ripples in the voices of writers, directors, and mentors who now walk paths he helped clear.
Robert Redford gave the world more than stories. He handed us tools, courage, space, and belief so we could tell our stories, too. And that legacy will continue to live on, shaping the future of film for generations to come.
