New York, NY — The groundbreaking Sámi-language drama series SHUT UP (Oro Jaska) proudly attended the International Emmy® Awards in New York this week, celebrating its historic nomination for Kids Live Action Series—the first time a Sámi production has ever been recognized in the category.

Set in the heart of Sápmi, SHUT UP (Oro Jaska) follows Elli Anne, a young Sámi woman navigating truth, justice, and identity after a traumatic assault. The series has gained international acclaim for its authenticity, emotional depth, and commitment to centering Sámi voices and lived experience.

“This story exists because brave Sámi people shared their truths, about abuse, about being queer, about surviving a harsh silence. Being recognized by the International Emmy® Academy has given us the opportunity to amplify their voices and our own,” said Vegard Bjørsmø (Sámi), co-creator and actor. “It was important for us to make SHUT UP (Oro Jaska) on the terms and from the perspective of our community, and seeing this story embraced by audiences around the world is beyond anything we imagined. This is a victory for Sámi artists, Sámi voices, and every Indigenous storyteller fighting to be seen.”

Series Creator and Producer Silje Bürgin-Borch added: “Our nomination marks a meaningful acknowledgment that Indigenous stories matter on a global scale. We are deeply proud to represent Sápmi at an event that brings together storytellers from around the world.”

Kátjá Rávdná Broch Einebakken, a Sámi actress, artist, and activist who plays a lead role in SHUT UP (Oro Jaska) shared: “My goal SHUT UP (Oro Jaska) has always been to create awareness and spark conversation about the series’ topics. The International Emmy Awards nomination gave the series a breath of new life and brought a lot of new attention. We have reached even further and reached even more people. I am proud of SHUT UP (Oro Jaska), of everyone who worked on the production, and of everyone whose stories we have told. This nomination is nothing but a huge win.”

The International Emmy® nomination highlights the continued expansion of Sámi-language storytelling and reinforces the series’ cultural impact across Nordic and international markets.
